Why are baby girls traditionally dressed in pink and baby boys in blue?

The colour blue has been associated with the intellect (therefore the masculine) and the colour red/pink with the feelings (therefore the feminine).
The myth of 'Bluebeard'indicates too much male conscious thinking, with insufficient feminine feeling according to Tom Chetwynd in 'A Dictionary of Symbols'.
Blue is the colour of the sky, that which is 'above' and red /pink (diluted red) the colour of the blood, that which is inside and down there.
